8 Day Ewaso river Walk - Samburu Led Luxury Walking Safari With Camels

Detailed Itineraries

Day 1

Fly in to Kimanjo Airstrip in Laikipia and drive to Tumaren, approximately 30 miles north of Nanyuki.
Tumaren is rich in wildlife because we solely manage its 3000 acres for conservation. Our camels, our team,and our camp will be waiting and you will be greeted by cool drinks and lunch. We will be camping on the upper end of the Ewaso Nyiro River, which is the same river that eventually flows through Samburu National Park. In the evening we will go for a walk and enjoy sundowners from a beautiful rock overlook. Along the way we are likely to pass Elephant, Impala, Dikdik, Steinbuck, Gerenuk, and hopefully Lesser Kudu.

Day 2

We will walk downstream to a camp called Namborr, a place where we can swim and enjoy the water. This area is popular with elephants and we might see other game such as Eland and Grevy's Zebra. The vegetation around here is predominantly Euphorbia and Acacia and it is popular with Gerenuk.

Day 3

We will walk downstream into the drier hilly country where the river cuts through a gorge and rushes through great rocks (Lorginyang - Crocodile Jaws). Camp will be at Leshashi, under shady Tortillis trees by some rapids and hopefully we shall see Klipspringer on the rocky slopes.

Day 4

We will continue downstream passing occasional local Samburu herds coming down to drink. This area is frequented by Elephants and we may have the opportunity to get close to them here. We will be arriving at Nagaratat Camp for lunch and and our afternoon relaxation under the shady Newtonia trees.

Day 5

We will walk on, further downstream, towards Namasaa a famous crossing place on the river. The landscape is spectacular and we will camp under some enormous Neutonia Trees, watching out for hippos in the deep pools. We will stay in this camp for two nights and at night we will be likely to be seranaded by Pearl-spotted Owlets.

Day 6

We will wake up early and walk to the pinnacle, Ngai Suisui, that has a dramatic 360 degree view of the area and is also the nesting site for a pair of Verreaux Eagles. We will have breakfast up on the rock and meander back down to the river where we will relax during the heat of the day. If we are lucky we might see a Greater Kudu on the hillside, a Bristled-Crowned Starling flying above the rapids or a Goliath Heron fishing in the quiet water.

Day 7

On our final day we will say goodbye to our camels, meeting a horse team on the opposite bank of the river. After crossing the river and mounting our horses we will ride up to Ol Malo, a luxury lodge hosted by Colin and Rocky Francombe, on the edge of the Laikipia Plateau. The views from here are incredible and from the rooms you can enjoy the view of Mt. Kenya and the wildlife coming to the salt lick below. Each room is unique and elegantly decorated and we will arrive for lunch around the infinity pool perched on the edge of the escarpment, overlooking much of our journey.
