Challenging trek to Machu Picchu

• Day 1: Cusco / Mollepata / Huayracmachay

  This morning, with your trek guide and group, you will be transferred from Cusco to Mollepata village. Here we will meet our support team who will load the camping equipment and food supplies on the horses and begin your trek. The views throughout the day are fantastic with verdant green mountains, a wide variety of native plants and flowers with birds. Towards the end of the day we will see the snow-capped peaks of Humantay and Salkantay (the Savage) looming high above us.

• Day 2: Trek Huayracmachay – Arayaniyoc - Colpapampa

  Today is the longest and hardest day of the trek but also the most beautiful from dry sceneries to snowy peaks and tropical areas. At around 7:00AM we will hike to a place called Pampas Salkantay, then go toward the left side of the snowy peaks of Umantay located next to the Apu Salkantay. At midday, we will be on the highest point (4600 meters above sea level) enjoying spectacular views of the mountains and the imposing snowy peaks of the Salkantay (6264 meters above sea level), the second highest point of the Cusco region. Following lunch at 1:00 PM at Huayracmachay we will trek around 3 more hours to our next camp in Challway (2920 meters above sea level).

• Day 3: Trek Colpapampa – Hatun Pocco - Sahuayaco

  After an early breakfast, we will have six hours approx. of easy, downhill hiking in the very lush and green high jungle or Ceja de Selva, where you will see coffee, and fruit plantations. Finally take the easy walk to Sahuayaco (2,250 m / 7,381 ft) where we will have lunch and make our final camp. Enjoy a free afternoon or as an Optional extra, from here we will take a small car for approximately 45 minutes to Santa Teresa village where there is the hot spring bath.

• Day 4: Trek Sahuayaco - Lucmabamba - Hydroelectric Plant - Aguas Calientes

  After breakfast, trek to Lucmabamba. Climb for about five hours through the jungle before descending to the interesting complex of Llactapacta (2,700 m / 8,858 ft), largely covered by vegetation. The day of the long awaited first view of Machu Picchu arrives, in the saddle of the mountain opposite. We descend for two hours to the impressive Machu Picchu Hydroelectric System. After you will walk for a further 2 and a half hours along the train tracks or take the 1 hour train to Aguas Calientes at 4:30 pm.

• Day 5: Machu Picchu Archaeological guided tour - Cusco

  Early morning walk or bus ride to the citadel of Machu Picchu, for a 2-hour guided tour. After that there is free time to explore the area or take the optional climb on your own to the mountain of Huayna Picchu, known as the Temple of the Moon, or you can hike to the Sun Gate, regarded as the entrance to Machu Picchu. Later, a shuttle bus will take you to the town of Aguas Calientes, where you will have time to relax and explore Aguas Calientes town. At around 15:45 take Vista Dome Train back to Ollanta Station, on arrival, you will be met and transferred by bus to Cusco. B
